COMMUNITY

The Kariba Minerals Ltd, Mapatizya mine has been in operation in the Zimba district region for over fifty years, producing amethyst that is widely recognized for its high quality. Worldwide, it is one of the oldest mines for semi-precious stones and one of the largest sources of quality amethysts. Kariba Minerals Ltd is well aware that mining operations have a direct impact on the daily lives of the local people, and therefore the company actively participates in the development of the area by training and employing local workers and investing in the development and construction of infrastructure. Kariba’s social responsibility toward our local community is at the heart of our plans. Kariba Minerals Ltd is a major economic development stakeholder in the Mapatizya community, and what the local population contributes to the company in the form of labour is reinvested in the community.

INFRASTRUCTURE

A number of facilities have been built to foster improved quality of life for the community. A new police station was opened recently. Schools have been built to provide children from 6 to 16 with access to quality elementary school education. Since workplace health and safety is an important issue for Kariba Minerals, the company supported the construction of a medical Centre. The clinic treats a number of people every day and provides the entire local community with access to fast and effective medical care. The roads and bridges are regularly maintained by Kariba Minerals Ltd. The company supports the construction and upkeep of small dams to assist in local subsistence farming. Kariba also drills and maintains wells to ensure that the people have access to potable water.

JOB CREATION

In addition to over 200 workers who work in the mine, Kariba Minerals has helped create several dozen jobs related to infrastructure construction and operations. Over the last decade, Kariba Minerals Limited has been going through a transformational process and has restructured it’s strategy towards supporting and actively participating in sustainable development goals. The company has engaged various stake holders at all levels and has formulated a Corporate Social Responsibility Policy as it embarks on journey to be the leading producer and supplier of Zambian sourced gemstones.

Our ability to operate successfully is reliant on our commitment to deliver long-term value to all our stakeholders and to proactively manage our impact on the wider environment. We are committed to sustainable development, by supporting and focusing on societal, environmental and corporate governance aspects, as we continue improving our performance and act as a driving force in leading the mining and gemstone industry towards achieving sustainable development .goals. We are convinced, that by applying international best practices and investing in community led development, we are able to help create thriving local economies, and protect people and their environment.

The company has a strong board which is comprised of directors from diverse professional backgrounds and has put in place a comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Policy to support this cause.

QUALITY EDUCATION, EMPLOYEE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

At Kariba Minerals Limited, we believe in quality education for all, by continuously encouraging personal growth through comprehensive training programs. We believe that our employees should have the necessary skills to reach their full potential. Learning and development programs are embedded in the everyday working environment.

As a company, Kariba Minerals Limited has continued to show it’s support to it’s employees by providing scholarships to deserving employees to further their education and improve on their skills. The company has further provided training in gemology, safety and management courses in order to form a truly customer focused workforce.

The company has taken a step further by supporting the local community schools by providing a computer room and housing for three teachers at Mapatizya Primary School.

GENDER EQUALITY

Kariba Minerals Limited has been able to continuously make a difference in the community by ensuring that we are actively involved in the communities in which we operate. We strive to improve the quality of life for our employees and the local communities. Our commitment towards creating a better life for those around our mining operations is fostered through a simple strategy of working together for a brighter tomorrow.

Kariba Minerals Limited has throughout the years created equal em ployment opportunities and has been a strong believer in gender equality. To date, the company has seen as much as 30% of our work force being female in both mine operations and administration. The company has also employed women in key roles such as Finance, Human Resource, Sales and Marketing.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

At Kariba Minerals Limited, occupational health and safety continued to be a key priority. Our safety drive is to sensitize and educate our staff and all who interact with us about the risks associated with their work environment. The company believes in being a brothers keeper and encourages working together to foster a safety culture. We adhere to world class safety standards and continually implement safety training programs. Kariba Minerals Limited cares for it’s employees and provides a comprehensive healthcare program for all its staff. This includes annual occupational health medical examinations, and provision of medical schemes, life and personal accident cover. Kariba Minerals Limited also works closely with government institutions to roll out health programs that include the following:

Fight Against COVID-19

The company spearheaded the fight against COVID-19 for it’s employees and the community. The company has been working closely with government health institutions on awareness campaigns and in implementing the COVID-19 health guidelines for its employees and the community.

The company has donated various equipment and products to the schools in Mapatizya, and to the Zimba district hospital. Items donated include, digital infrared thermometers, N95 face masks, reusable face masks, surgical gloves, hand washing basins, disinfectants, hand sanitizers and gum boots. This enabled the school to reopen under the COVID-19 health guidelines .

We actively coordinate various awareness and prevention programs to continually up date employees and their families with vital information and encouraging behavioral change to prevent further transmissions.

Family Planning

The company has continued to work with the local authorities to raise awareness in the community in Mapatizya about family planning and to provide guidance to employees and their families.

Malaria Prevention and Tuberculosis Awareness

Malaria and Tuberculosis prevention remains a key concern for the company and the mining sector in Zambia. Over the last decade, the company has been working closely with govern ment health institutions in malaria and tuberculosis prevention programs. Improving Community Health Facilities at Health Centers The company improved health care facilities for the community by donating equipment for solar lighting, mattresses, beddings and cleaning material to the health center. This has ena bled the health center operate on a 24 hours basis and increase its admission ward capacity as it provides health care to the community.

CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT

The company’s sustainable development framework, govern the way in which Kariba Minerals Limited identifies, manages and mitigates its key environmental risks. Kariba Minerals Limited is licensed under the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) and the Mines Safety Department (MSD) under the Ministry of Mines of Zambia which monitors and regulates its performance in Zambia. We believe that our actions today are the seeds sown that will grow tomorrow’s fruit. This is why every step taken is one which aims to protect, rather than harm the environment . The company has implemented the following programs as part of it’s programs to care for the environment.

Clean Water and Sanitation

The company provides fresh clean water to the Health Center and Mapatizya police post.  The company is preserving water bodies by recycling water in processing plants. Greener Energy and Carbon Emission Footprint  The company installed solar panels for the company guest houses and security lighting at the mine site to kick start the campaign to reduce carbon emissions through the use of greener energy. This has reduced carbon emissions from diesel generators. Community and Stakeholder Engagement The company further supports community programs through the following activities: - Supporting cultural and traditional ceremonies in the area to preserve the country’s heritage. - Participating and supporting recreational activities in the local community such as football and netball.

Kariba Minerals Limited has created partnerships through vertical and horizontal business integration in order to foster development. This includes supply chain management and activities in the following areas:

Small Scale Gemstone Mining

The company has created partnerships with other small scale miners in the country in order to uplift the lively hoods of the community and to provide a consistent supply of gemstones to the local and international market. Gemstone Cutting and Polishing The company has partnered with gemstone lapidary institutions and companies to provide value addition to the rough gemstones mined. Sales and Marketing

- The company has partnered with marketing and sales agents to provide a wider marketing foot print of our gemstone products. Other Community Partnerships

- The company has made various other value chain partnerships in the supply of goods and services for the mining operations including food supply from local farmers and labour hire.
